Boats and Streams - Aptitude test

Online aptitude test based on the topic - 'Boats and Streams' for evaluating quantitative ability. The questions are extracted from real competitive exams like bank PO, SSC, Railways, and various other state-level MBA exams. Below are some important formulae:

1. Upstream: A ship or boat traveling in the water against the flow of the current is called upstream.

2. Downstream: A ship or boat traveling in the water along the flow of the current is called downstream.

3. If the speed of the boat in still water is u km/hr, and the speed of the stream is v km/hr, then

Speed downstream = (u+v) km/hr
Speed upstream = (u-v) km/hr

4. If the speed downstream is a km/hr and the speed upstream is b km/hr, then

Speed in still water = 1/2(a+b) km/hr

Rate of stream = 1/2(a-b) km/hr

Q1.The speed of a boat while traveling downstream is 32 km/hr, whereas its speed when traveling upstream is 28 km/hr. Find the speed of the boat in still water.

Q2: The speed of a boat while traveling downstream is 32 km/hr, whereas its speed when traveling upstream is 28 km/hr. Find the speed of the stream.

Q3. A person takes 3 hours 45 minutes to row a boat 15 km downstream of a river, and 2 hours 30 minutes to cover a distance of 5 km upstream. Find the speed of the river current.

Q4: A boat goes 8 km upstream and then returns. The total time taken is 4 hrs 16 minutes, if the velocity of the current is 1 km/hr, find the actual velocity of the boat.

Q5: A person row 6 km/hr in still water. He takes twice as long to row upstream as to row down the river. What is the rate of the stream?

Q6: A ship takes 4 hrs to cover a distance of 60 km against the current of the sea. And the same ship takes 2 hrs to cover the same distance if it travels along the current of the sea. Find the speed of the ship in still water.

Q7: A ship can travel at 10 km/hr in still water. It traveled 91 km downstream in a river and then returned back to the starting point. The overall time taken is 20 hours. Find the rate of the flow of the river.

Q8: A person rows downstream 32 km in 6 hours and then rows 14 km upstream in 6 hours. Then the velocity of the current is:

Q9: A person goes 18 km downstream in 4 hours and returns against the stream in 12 hours. Find the speed of the stream.

Q10: The speed of the current is 3 km/hr. If a person wants to row the boat up to 5 km upstream, then how much time will he take if he maintains the speed of 4 km/hr in still water?

Q11: Find the speed of the current if a boat's speed in still water is 3 km/hr and its downstream speed is 5 km/hr.

Q12: A river is flowing at a rate of 8 km/hr, and a boat traveling upstream at 4 km/hr up to a certain number of kilometers. At what rate does the boat come back to the starting point traveling downstream?
